pigz for Debian
---------------
This is the pigz utility packaged for Debian. All relevant information can be
found in the manpage pigz(1).
pigz is supposed to be a replacement of gzip - however, the default
installation is not replacing gzip binary due to various concerns, like
differences in the output data, differences in program/help output, basic risk
considerations (/bin/gzip is an essential executable), and the fact that it's
installed in /usr spaces which might be not located within / filesystem space.
If the mentioned concerns don't scare you or are not relevant, it's possible to
make it a system-wide default setting by running the following commands as
root. It's also advisable to make sure that pigz is not accidentally
uninstalled during administrative work since the usual safety mechanisms won't
be triggered here.
dpkg-divert --local --add --rename --divert /bin/gzip.gzip /bin/gzip
ln -s /usr/bin/pigz /bin/gzip
This can be reverted later using:
rm /bin/gzip
dpkg-divert --remove --rename --divert /bin/gzip.gzip /bin/gzip
